Organization & Planning for Leaders Site Changes

To all you wonderful visitors of SharingWithYW.com I give you my heartfelt thanks!

I began this site as one of my own value projects while earning the new medallion alongside my girls. I quickly realized how much we as women enjoy seeing and using what each other has done in our callings!

I haven't really done anything to maintain this site since my release from the YW program a few years ago and I'm sorry to report that I only got some of my many files up here to begin with! And yet so many faithful visitors come here for what I did get up! I'm sorry I haven't done more with it but I aim to repent. ;o)

The format for this site is becoming outdated and has become a real problem with hackers, spammers and other general riff-raff. So I'm moving everything over to my new site: Holly's Corner where I can keep things active, get all my other files up as well and provide better security. I've been working on this for a while and almost everything I've contributed here is now over there.

One change I had to make today here was to disable the forums as they were becoming plagued with cruddy stuff. I think you'll like the new format that encorporates the blog style for sharing comments and more detailed information. The security is a plus for all of us. Within a short time this site will be redirected to the new one.

For now, I want to give you all a heads up as to why the forums disappeared and to prepare you for the upgrades that are underway. I'm really excited about this as I've been able to compile so much more of what I've done in better and more complete ways.

Again, I send you my heartfelt thanks for your support and for spending some of your time here. I hope to see and get to know you all better at Holly's Corner!

Hugs, Holly

  Lessons Power of Procreation Lesson

Every now and then I have a really big lesson. This was one of those that was a real success for me and made a lasting impression, hopefully on my girls too! So I thought I'd share what I did for it.

First, I looked over the lesson content. I decided, I wanted the focus to be on the goal of temple marriage and eternal families. I also determined that I could do a lot with the concept of "gifts". And so I began.

I read through the lesson several weeks before. I knew I was giving it to the entire group so I'd have more girls and all ages to consider. I already knew I wanted to do a handout telling them that the greatest gift they could give to their husband was their reflection of purity, because I was given a handout with this saying as a beehive and it stuck with me. The rest started to snowball once I got the ball rolling.

I did my lesson outline and printed my notes out on index cards for easier handling and referencing during my lesson. This was a tremendous help.

I took a box and wrapped it all up pretty with a gold bow and white paper. I put it on the table. Inside, I had another smaller box wrapped the same way and inside that box I had the handouts for the lesson.

As I listened to conference I knew I wanted to reference President Hinckley's talk on women and marriage and as I listened to the YW General Presidency counselor I got the vision for the first part of my lesson. I pulled a picture of a temple and a a mountain from my visual aid pile. And I created some gray clouds with words and images of the tugs and pulls of the world. These I put at the bottom of the mountain to represent the world. I asked the girls how we rise above the world and these pressures. The answer is in the FTSOY book and I then put up all these standards to show how they each lift us up to our goal and help us reach the top.

As we talked about the first gift I put up the comparison photos for the girls to see on the overhead. I'd put one down and then the next. At the end I'd put them both up and show the stark comparisons.

As we moved on and talked about chastity I used some posters to keep us on track with the important elements. And I pulled the second gift out of the first and set it next to it on the table. This represented how this sacred gift was found within our bodies.

I ended my lesson by telling the girls that I had a special gift for them too. I opened the small gift box and held up the handout. I read the card and told them that the small gift box was to remind them of this pure gift that was to be used only in the bonds of marriage. I introduced my friend, Margo Edgeworth, who graciously came to perform her award winning New Era song, "Somewhere, There's Somebody Waiting".

The handouts have the quote on the back from Elder Packer about guarding and protecting this gift. When I was walking through Michael's the day before my lesson I saw these little clear boxes in the brides isle. They were on sale and I knew I had to have them. I thought it would be a nice touch to put the interlocking silver rings inside.

The quote on the back reads: "Protect and guard your gift. Your acutal happiness is at stake. Eternal family life, now only in your anticipations and dreams, can be achieved because our Heavenly Father has bestowed this choicest gift of all upon you - this power of creation. It is the very key to happiness. Hold this gift as sacred and pure. Use it only as the Lord has directed."

This is one lesson that I know I will always remember.

Best wishes to all of you!
Holly

Organization & Planning for Leaders Young Women Theme in Sign Language

There has been quite a bit of interest in learning the Young Women Theme in sign language. It is a wonderful way to get the girls to slow down and ponder on the words they are saying and their meaning.

For those who have tried this you already know some of the issues. And for those who don't have access to the help of a professional coming to help them learn it, you are left to other resources. I am including a link of all the resources I've found helpful at the bottom of this article.

One of the first things to understand about American Sign Language (ASL), is that there are many different interpretations for signs, just as there are many different dialects of any one language. When we began this project, we had a girl taking ASL at school. We found that she had learned slightly different variations of the same terms and words as our advisor had.

The good news is that anything you do with this is a wonderful use of your time and energies. Perfection is not a requirement to do good - doing our best is. So to help you in your efforts, I want to share some of the wonderful resources I have found on this. I wish I had found them all when we began this project at the beginning of the year!

  Lessons 2005 Lesson Information

I can't believe we're already planning for another year. But here it is ready or not!

The church has added a new section on the website called "Serving in the Church" and the all the answers for us are there! If you click on the "Gospel Instruction" link you will find a wealth of information. I'll share some of it here as well as direct links at the bottom of this article.

The general Young Women curriculum consists of three lesson manuals, one of which is used each year. The Young Women manuals to be used in the coming years are as follows:

Young Women Manual 2 2004
Young Women Manual 3 2005
Young Women Manual 1 2006

There are additional cirriculm instructions for smaller wards and branches that can be found on the church site.

Activities & Mutual 2005 Mutual Theme

The new mutual theme for 2005 is:

"A great and a marvelous work" (1 Nephi 14:7).

I'm so excited for this new theme and can't wait to jump in with using it to help us plan our events and activities in 2005.

The church site also explained the use of this theme to help us plan cultural events that help youth focus on the 175th anniversary of the organization of the Church and the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Joseph Smith.

I really hope and pray that I can help all our girls gain a personal testimony of the Prophet, Joseph Smith and that by year's end they feel that they know him, and not just the work he helped bring to pass.

  New Beginnings Mission Possible

A fun theme in the spirit of the movie and TV series "Mission Impossible". Leaders will dress as secret agents in sunglasses, trench coats, hats and or black clothing.

Our evening covered four specific missions. See our outline for details: Mission Possible Outline We started their new filing system for them by giving at least one handout per value. See the value pages document uploaded on this site to see the master handout in each folder: Value Pages Handouts

We are having so much fun with this theme! Our girls will each be getting a briefcase with 7 file folders. There are file folders in each of the 7 value colors and the briefcase is a 2" expandable plain manilla file folder.

We needed 40 sets of file folders so we economized by bying two each of a color variety set of file folders from Smead. I got them through Office Max online. It cost us $42 for four boxes of 100. The downside is that they only had grey in their second set of colors instead of white and we only needed purple and white so we have several folders left over of burgandy, navy and teal. But I'm sure we'll put them to good use. In the future, I would try to find a few other wards who want to use folder like this and by the 7 boxes of desired colors and split the costs. :) Knowing ahead of time to buy during the back to school sales could also help. Oh - and I ordered mine online on the 19th and they were delivered two days later!

We struggled to find a container to hold the files in and then I chanced upon these legal sized manila exapandable folders. They're perfect! I think we'll hole punch the top and tie some ribbons or something as handles. They were also only 50 cents a piece! Everything else I found was over $2 ea. In fact, I found a dream set that included a plastic breifcase style holder with 6 of the value colors inside as removable plastic files. But they were almost $10 ea. and we just don't have that much money.

We really wanted to involve as many leaders and their own creativity as possible. So we decided on having each decorate an area and do a short presentation on one of the values. We grouped them in pairs to cut down on shuffling time. This way each leader will present their own value color in a completely unique way.

The file folders will help each girl have a special place for all those fun handouts from lessons, special talks or articles, etc. Leaders are already talking about class activities that could show the girls how to put these organized items into a scrapbook of handouts or just added to their own personal scrapbook pages.

If you want any additional details please feel free to e-mail me at: holly@intechra.net
